The former Zambia National Art Teacher’s Association (ZANATA) will be holding an art competition for schools in Luapula Province.

The competition dubbed “2010 art and design competition,” is aimed at promoting art and design in Luapula.
The competition will be hosted by Samfya’s Twingi High School.

And Twingi High School teacher, Chilonga Nkhande said the competition will encourage pupils take art serious as it will make them refrain from indulging in illicit behavior.

“Most young people do not think art is important but it can help them generate some money to earn a descent living through making artistic things like baskets, sculptures and many more things. Instead of indulging themselves in destructive vices to find money,” said Nkhande.

Nkhande said most young people in Luapula Province have no recreational activities except fishing.

Nkhande said after the art competition they will also be holding a workshop for art and design teachers. The workshop will be aim at teaching and learning of art and design in schools.

“The work shop will help art and design teachers to realize that art as a subject should be prioritized like any other subject. Because it is sad to see how the subject is being sidelined when everything in the world has to do with art so if it is taken seriously it can contribute to national development,” said Nkhande.
