MILANZI MMD member of parliament Reuben Chisanga-Banda on Thursday died at Lusaka's University Teaching Hospital (UTH).
Eastern Province MMD chairperson Kennedy Zulu and Chipangali MMD member of parliament Vincent Mwale confirmed Banda's death in separate interviews yesterday.
Zulu said Banda died at UTH where he was admitted after being involved in a road accident on January 25 this year.
He said the accident occurred near Nyamphande Orphanage in Chongwe.
"Honourable was involved in an accident together with his friend Honourable Mwale for Chipangali who escaped unhurt. Honourable Banda had been admitted at UTH since then until his death last night Thursday night," Zulu said.
And Mwale said Banda had been admitted at the UTH's Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since the day of the accident.
"The accident occurred when we were travelling from Chipata on Monday where we attended the provincial consultative meeting, January 25. We travelled very well but when we reached Nyamphande Orphanage, we saw a woman crossing the road at a distance of about 30 metres so Honourable Banda tried to avoid her but we swayed to the left side and overturned.
We rolled three times and Honourable Banda was complaining of chest pains but I wasn't hurt," Mwale explained.
"I am very shocked that he has died because four days ago, he was okay and he wanted to be discharged but the condition changed two days ago until his death in the early hours of today yesterday. His death is sad to the family, is bad to the party and it's also very sad to us friends," said Mwale who visited the funeral house in Lusaka's Kabwata area .
Banda became Milanzi member of parliament in 2008 after the death of then parliamentarian Dr Chosani Njobvu.
