SECOND assistant referee, Winter Katowa over the weekend punched Mongu Academy FC player, Lineford Njemba during a FAZ/MTN Division One South league match against Mazabuka United played at the Showgrounds.
With scores level at one-all, Ben Simuyuni's strike on 68 minute sparked the row, after Chilanga-based referee, Linos Makowa awarded the goal.
Njemba confronted Katowa in protest, believing that it was scored from an offside position.
Unexpectedly, Katowa dropped his flag and unleashed the blow which could have impressed a boxing scout.
The fracas prompted both council and state police to swiftly move in and rescue the player from further punishment by the charging match official, who is based in Mazabuka.
Katowa was later escorted by police to the dressing room in company of Makowa, first assistant referee, Siachikupi and club officials from both teams, where they had a protracted discussion in an attempt to let the match continue.
A bitter exchange of words erupted during the discussion
between the club officials who threatened to beat each other.
Makowa declared the environment unfavourable for the game to continue, consequently abandoning the match.
Mazabuka United secretary, Hubert Mwanza said he was disappointed with the turn of events but pointed out that he was looking forward to a positive verdict over the abandoned match, while his Mongu Academy counterpart
refused to talk to the press.
The incident comes barely a week after the match between Nakambala Leopards and Luena Buffaloes of Kaoma was abandoned after a disputed penalty awarded by another Chilanga-based referee, Dickson Liyuma, at Nakambala Stadium in Mazabuka.
And police in Mazabuka confirmed receiving a report over the incident involving Njemba and Katowa.
Officer-in-charge, George Ngoma said a case of affray was recordedadding that the duo was fined as there was no case of assault because they both fought each other.
