COPPERBELT-BASED producer and singer Frank Chirwa says artistes and musicians countrywide have a duty to promote the genre in their respective areas.
Better known as Afunika, the singer was speaking during a show at Elis Nightclub in Mansa on Saturday night.
Afunika, who draws his inspiration from the late PK Chishala, said one's place of residence had nothing to do with succeeding in the music industry.
"Talent is talent. If you are talented in a specific duty, for sure you will have the ability to do better than others. Don't be cheated that you need to be living in Lusaka for you to gain fame, even here in Mansa you can make it through. You just have to be determined and stick to your vision, then the sky will be the limit. The principle is simple: 'when you are good, you are good'. I didn't shift from Copperbelt to Lusaka for me to be where I am.
"I was working at Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) before I started my music career. If I can remember well, my first show I did i here at Mansa Hotel with the likes of Mozegetor. I was nothing by then so people where just passing by without recognizing me but today? You know what I mean," said Afunika.
Afunika, Chikowise, Nice M and Landlord were in Mansa where they staged two live performances at Elis night club and Rock front café over the weekend.
On Saturday Chiko wise, real name Mwimba Chiko Mwenya, Nice M (Mwaba Mulenga) and Landlord (James Siyingwa) entertained patrons for over seven hours with Landlord performing his most popular songs Chosen one, Mwabwela and Kuti waya shani.
At 1AM, Afunika appeared on stage giving the audience some of the songs from his upcoming 11-track album Free to mingle.
Performing Iciselema, Hold me now and Teti nkulabe, the 27-year-old singer also sampled his new songs Chimusebo chakumanda ft JK, Example, Tensele ft Chef, Wisozale ft Marky II and Wikabomfwila, among others.
After the performance, Afunika said he was willing to share his eight years of experience in music with upcoming artistes.
Afunika further disclosed that he was happily married to Elizabeth Chirwa, adding that he was also the father of two daughters.
